Sumas Environmental Services Inc.

The Burnaby facility is permitted by B.C. MoE for handling various hazardous wastes through incineration, stabilization and bioremediation. These include all special waste with TDG Classes (2 to 9), hydrocarbon contaminated soil, waste water and waste oil.

The Burnaby facility is located at 4623 Byrne Road (off Marine Way) in Burnaby, BC. The facility is located on 4.2 acres owned by Sumas Environmental Services.

The facility is permitted by B.C. MoE to accept the following Special Wastes under Permit No. PS-8096. The discharge of air emissions from the incinerator plant is authorized under Air Discharge Permit GVA 0383. The waste water plant is operated and the treated water is discharge to the GVRD sanity sewer under discharge permit SC-100029-FSA.

Sumas operates a rotary kiln incinerator for the thermal destruction of the organic components of various waste streams such as paint and solvent. In the kiln, all waste streams are subjected to a thermal oxidizing environment where organic components are oxidized to carbon dioxide and water. Sumas also operates a water treatment plant for industrial waste water before discharge to the sewer. The waste treatment plan employs precipitation, coagulation, and dual filtration including activated carbon to successfully treat this effluent. Other treatment technologies employed on-site include: bioremediation of hydrocarbon contaminated soil, neutralization of acids and alkalines, and stabilization of sludge and metal contaminated waste.

The facility has been designed to the highest industry standards and siting, design and operational requirements meet or exceed those set forth in the Special Waste Regulations for Special Waste facilities. The facility features four distinct areas, the office, the process equipment area including incineration and waste water treatment plants, the consolidation pad, and the barrel storage area. The equipment pad and consolidation pad features a 15-cm high retaining curbing. The barrel storage features a 20-cm high retaining curbing. The curbing prevents any spilled materials from being released into the soil. The three storage tanks for flammable and non-flammable liquids are installed on a covered and bermed liquid storage pad. The rotary kiln incinerator system is protected through safeguard controls and electrical interlocks. Emergency procedures are in place should the system fair and operators are well trained to deal with emergency situations. The storage of all wastes and treated material on-site adheres to the Special Waste Regulations and BC Fire Code. A comprehensive contingency and fire protection plan has been developed for the site and includes fire prevention measures emergency response procedures.
