Sumas offers a full service for the treatment of organic liquids
and solids through various processes.The
most common option is the beneficial use of waste through recycling
(recovery through distillation), or fuel blending. In addition,
organics can be incinerated and sludgy non-regulated oily material
can be solidified for land filling.
Sumas typically offers incineration for waste streams that can
not be recycled or used as alternate fuels. Although this is the
most expensive option, it is the only option that absolutely removes
any future liability. In general Sumas will attempt to recycle these
waste streams as alternate fuels where possible.
The organic wastes treated at Sumas facilities include: paints,
resins, inks and printing materials, dry cleaning chemicals, industrial
oils, labpacks, spray booth sludge, grease and oil filters.
Fuel blending or recycling provides our customers with an option
to reuse the product as a feedstock for oil burners, cement kilns,
or other industrial furnaces and boilers. This option frequently
provides the client with economic advantages over incineration or
stabilization for land filling. Fuel blending is a cost effective
and extremely economical option for customers if their material
contains >5000 Btu energy per pound.
Solvent recycling is the recovery of solvents from used (or spent)
solvent waste streams. Typically, the customer's waste solvent is
distilled to separate the reusable solvent from other material such
as sludge or water. Processing also includes filtration and fractionation,
depending on the characteristics of the solvent, the material being
removed from it, and the intended future use of the solvent. The
reusable solvent is either returned to the customer on a tolling
basis or sold to a third party, if the original generator does not
want the solvent back. The spent solvent is picked up and transported
to a Sumas facility for processing by Sumas owned van or tank trucks.
